Five fires in one week: what Singapore reported, 10–16 August 2026

Singapore had a busy fire week.

From 10 to 16 August, at least five fires made the news. One person died. About 50 residents left one HDB block. About 120 people left a mall. One worker went to hospital.

This is what was actually reported, in plain language.

πŸ”₯Β The week at a glance

  • 1 life lost
  • 1 person taken to hospital
  • ~170 people evacuated
  • 5 publicly reported incidents

If you only remember one thing: get out, stay out, call 995.

πŸ“ 10 August β€” Sengkang

A recycling bin went up at the foot of Block 289B Compassvale Crescent.

It was about 8.10pm. A neighbour grabbed a hose and put it out before SCDF arrived. Nobody was hurt.

Small fire. Fast response. That is the whole story, and it is enough.

Reported by STOMP and Lianhe Zaobao, with SCDF confirming the call.

πŸ“ 11 August β€” Junction 8

Dinner at Yakiniku Like turned into an evacuation.

SCDF was called at about 7.10pm. They said the fire involved a table grill and the exhaust ducting in the dining area. A hosereel put it out. The mall said the sprinkler and fire curtain also kicked in.

About 120 people left the building. An employee from the shop next door went to Singapore General Hospital with smoke inhalation.

The restaurant closed for checks. The rest of the mall reopened.

πŸ“ 13 August β€” Woodlands

Late morning, second floor of Woodlands Recreation Centre (200 Woodlands Industrial Park E7).

SCDF said a stall fire involved cooking on a stove and the kitchen exhaust. Workers hit it with extinguishers and hosereels. Nobody was hurt.

Kitchen exhausts do this more often than people think. Unattended heat, grease, a duct that has not been cleaned. The official cause was still open. The pattern is familiar.

πŸ“ 13 August β€” Whampoa

Same day, about 3.30pm. A grass patch near Block 34 Whampoa West, next to a carpark.

The burn was about five by five metres. SCDF put it out with a hosereel. Nobody was hurt.

AsiaOne, on scene, saw candles, joss sticks and partly burnt joss paper nearby. Hungry Ghost month was on. That is what the photographer saw. It is not the same as SCDF naming a cause.

If you burn offerings: stay with them. Use a proper burner. Do not leave candles on the grass.

πŸ“ 16 August β€” Jurong East

Early Sunday, 3.55am, Block 339 Jurong East Avenue 1.

Firefighters found black smoke coming from a third-storey living room and had to force the door. A 67-year-old man was found unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

About 50 residents were evacuated. Police said they did not suspect foul play. The fire involved items in the living room. The cause was still under investigation.

βœ… What to do with a week like this

You cannot prevent every fire. You can be less surprised by one.

At home

  • Keep the corridor and gate clear. You need to leave in seconds, not after moving a bike.
  • Stay with cooking. Exhausts need cleaning, not just hope.
  • If you burn offerings, stay with the fire until it is out.

If something starts

  • Alert the people next to you.
  • Leave if smoke or fire is spreading. Do not go back for a phone.
  • Call 995 from a safe place.

The line that matters

Get out. Stay out. Call 995.
